Scarlato, D. (2018) In limbo. [Composition] (Unpublished)
Abstract
For string orchestra, duration approx. 10 minutes. This piece was commissioned by the International Spring Orchestra Festival Malta and received its first performance at Teatru Manoel, La Valletta (Malta), on 14 April 2018, given by Tyresias Ensemble and Baltic Neopolis Orchestra. In Limbo draws inspiration from the book of the same title by Elena Remigi, which gathers stories of European citizens in the UK after the Brexit vote. As the author says: "our limbo is not only about having the right documents or not. There is a psychological limbo too, in which we all feel we have plunged. My hope is that we can all return to behold the stars, content and settled as we were before this referendum" (europestreet.news). And this is how we felt and we feel, suspended in between what our lives were and will be. The piece tries to depict the anxieties, uncertainties, anger and betrayal described in the book, without excluding a glimmer of hope after this life changing event.
