Five pieces for two clavichords

Charlston, T. (2018) Five pieces for two clavichords. [Composition] (Unpublished)

Abstract

The Five Pieces for Two Clavichords were composed for a concert performance using two five-octave unfretted clavichords and inspired by the 40th anniversary of Four Lessons for Two Keyboards written by Peter Maxwell Davies in 1978. I am very grateful to Julian Perkins for encouraging me to write them and for joining me to play through, and comment on the early drafts. We gave the first performance on 30th March 2019 in the Quaker Meeting House, Harpenden, UK. The video performances given by Julian Perkins and Terence Charlston were recorded at Stone House in South London on 6th September 2019. The first video includes a spoken introduction followed by a performance of No. 1 of the five pieces, and the second video introduces a performance of No. 4. The clavichords are by Peter Bavington (2002) after J. H. Silbermann and by Karin Richter (1998) after C. G. Hubert. The Hubert/Richter clavichord was kindly loaned by Peter Bavington and Judith Wardman. The video producer is Zen Grisdale. Each movement has its own, distinct style and contrasting atmosphere. Pieces I, III and V use special playing techniques similar to those specified in the Maxwell Davies pieces. These include damping and brushing the string, plucked tremolo, and strumming chords. An official recording of all five pieces is now available at the ‘Official URL’ given on the 'Metadata' tab below, with further details available at https://researchonline.rcm.ac.uk/id/eprint/2356/ on this repository.
