Forms entangled, shapes collided

Hesketh, K. (2012) Forms entangled, shapes collided. [Composition]

Abstract

For mixed quintet (alto flute, bass clarinet, percussion, violin, violoncello), duration 20 minutes. This piece was toured nationally in the UK throughout 2013, performed by Pshappa. "'Forms entangled, shapes collided' was written as part of a collaboration between contemporary music ensemble Psappha and choreographer Sharon Watson, Artistic Director of Phoenix Dance Theatre, Leeds with funding from the RPS Drummond Fund. The dance piece, titled Repetition of Change, toured nationally throughout 2013. The work is in six sections that run without a break: 1: Fragmentary eventually becoming fixed – 2: Sensual intertwining of disparate lines becoming unified but fractious - 3/4: (A double section): Low, gruff leading to high, penetrating, mercurial - 5: Sections of intense but faltering movement halted by tense stasis leading to - 6: Kinetic, driven, eventually exploding into tendrils dissipating into nothingness. Mutation, heredity, and variation (ideas taken from evolutionary biology) are explored in the composition as the subject of DNA was the stimulus for the choreography. The idea that Everything existing in the universe is the fruit of chance and necessity (Democritus) proved not only useful in approaching the collaboration itself but also suggested the importance of being alive to hidden patterns and structures during the composition process itself, a methodology which has become firmly established as the starting point in any new work." © 2019 K.
